Drafters create the guidelines of how a structure is going to be built. They work hand in hand with engineers and construction workers to ensure that their work is structurally sound and that the projects will be safe for use. Drafters can complete their work by hand, and in other cases, they may make use of Computer-Aided Design and Drafting programs, also known as CADD.
Table of Contents
Mechanical Drafters
Mechanical drafters prepare drawings used to create mechanical products, such as automobile parts, tools, and machines. When such drafting technicians make these types of plans, they include information on the dimensions of mechanical products and how they should be assembled.
Civil Drafters
Civil drafters make drawings essential in the building of infrastructure projects such as bridges, pipelines, highways, and sewer systems. Besides, civil drafters prepare relief and topographical maps that are used by construction professionals and engineers.
Electrical Drafters
Electrical drafters work closely with engineers to create drawings and diagrams used for the electrical wiring of structures, such as power plants, communication centers, and buildings. Their work includes visiting the designs’ locations and creating rough sketches, preparing the specifications of the project, including the stress factors, weight, and volumes involved, and ensuring that the electrical wiring is compliant with applicable regulations.
Architectural Drafters
Architectural drafters make drawings used in construction projects. Their work is used to construct private homes, school buildings, factories, office buildings, and shopping centers. For these projects to be completed, architectural drafters take the ideas from engineers, architects, or designers and use it to develop the plans for a structure and details about how the construction should be completed. Drafters need to check the drawings for mistakes and make necessary corrections to such projects.
Marine Drafters
Marine drafters make the drawings that are used to manufacture ships, yachts, and marine structures. This work includes the creation of a marine vehicle’s floor plan and information about the location of electrical systems and plumbing.
Aeronautical Drafters
Aeronautical drafters prepare the drawings used to manufacture airborne vehicles such as airplanes, missiles, and helicopters. These drafters work with engineers and use their feedback to make corrections to their pictures to ensure that the designs are accepted.
